The Richardson residence was started in May of 2009, and was originally designed to address a major drainage issue around the pool. After installing the successful French drainage system that prevented the run-off from reaching the pool, we began discussing other issues in the backyard. We then replaced a retaining wall that was installed incorrectly and started to focus on creating a low maintenance back-yard retreat.

This project grew into a total landscape renovation to include replacement of all edging, installing large out-cropping steps, night lighting, a fire pit, deck with custom railing, and limestone stepping stones. Even though we started with smaller projects we were able to develop an entire master plan that pulled everything together to unify the entire landscape. Patty and Mike entertain large groups of people, so additional patio space was created, and access was improved to the pool with stone steps and series of terraced retaining walls. We improved curb appeal with a new planting design, night lighting and a fountain in the front yard.

We utilized black cedar mulch in the front yard for a softer look from the curb, but in the back yard we used stone mulch to keep debris from blowing into the pool. We utilized a synthetic deck with an all metal railing, a limestone edger, and concrete pavers, with all of these elements creating a very functional and low maintenance project. The site design was a collaborative effort between Weston and Dave. Matt, Santé and Justin were all lead foreman on the job in different phases of construction.

The main challenge on this project was site access, because the property backs up to a golf course. We were able to reduce construction cost by working with the golf course manager who allowed us to bring truck loads of material as needed to the backyard. The formal design of the stone columns and rectangular design help to tie everything together.Patty really enjoys the night lighting around the pool. Since we have finished construction, the home owners have meticulously maintained the property.
