Sandy and Jerry Hurd came to Landscapes By Design with a need to create a functional outdoor living space to encompass the backyard. We were referred to Jerry after working with his daughter on her landscape installation in Madrid, Iowa.
This project site was in Storm Lake, Iowa and with the site being right on the lake site access made the walls a challenge to complete. The final project ended into a multi level rock landscape beds with a large 16’ circle patio with a seat wall just a couple feet from Storm Lake. Separating the multi level landscape beds are two 300 square feet boulder walls with limestone outcropping steps leading up to the house. The walls were constructed out of hand selected Iowa field boulders directly out of the Hurd farm fields.
After noticing our attention to detail and level of craftsmanship, Sandy and Jerry asked LBD to come back to install a 24’ by 16’ patio next to the house with a rectangular inlay. The upper patio has 3 steps built out of Weston wall that are 24’ wide with 2 large pillars on each end of the steps and seat walls extending to the house. From the steps a green joint flagstone path leads to 17 Iowa buff limestone outcropping steps that wind down through the multi level rock landscape beds to the dock.
The project was headed up by Justin and Santé with Matt and Charley coming up to help on weekends. The final project consisted of around 300 native Iowa perennials, 18 copper night lighting fixtures, 2 separate patios, seat walls, 250 linear feet of 4” x 4” Iowa buff limestone edging, 45 tons of river rock, 75 tons of boulders, 7 tons of Iowa buff limestone outcropping, and 3 tons of Iowa buff flagstone. On the weekends Sandy and Jerry’s children and grand kids frequent the lake house to boat, fish, and enjoy each others’ company on one of the two patios.
The scale and attention to detail in this project typically results in other boaters and home owners stopping by or swinging by for a closer look at the property. Jerry and Sandy are really enjoying a functional, low maintenance space that affords them enough room to get together with all of their extended family.
