Devon Lewis' project was the first major installation of its size that we took on in the fall of 2004. We had worked with the materials and completed smaller jobs utilizing similar construction techniques but this was the first time we had the opportunity to take on a project of this size in one phase. This was also the first time Weston had the opportunity to work with Bill Boone and installing his vision from a very simple sketch which allowed us some freedom to make changes as the project progressed.
This was a complete renovation from the front of the house all way to the backyard, where a pond-less waterfall is the focal point. This project is what caught Denny Dolmage’s eye and lead to the installation of his project.
This project also combines several materials such as flagstone, pavers, composite decking, and copper lighting fixtures. We created a living wall in the backyard that retains a slope, but creates planting pockets to soften the effect. We used an Eden stone from Wisconsin to create a generous step down into the backyard oasis. A running bond pattern was used to install a 2’ wide pathway to the back deck and patio. The pathway also doubles as the mowing edge and creates a sweeping line that draws your eye to the pond-less water feature.
When working on a project of this size, there are always challenges, and on this project it was working around and with other contractors who where renovating the inside of the home. It took a lot of communication and in one particular instance, we had to help out a geo-thermal contractor who was behind schedule and holding up the installation of the paver driveway with winter just around the corner.
The front yard is also quite impressive and features a very intimate patio with a millstone fountain. Our wood-working expert, Charley, also constructed 3 arbors to create a screen from the neighbors basketball court.
Devon enjoys gardening and completed all the planting selection herself. We did help with auguring some holes and installing some larger shrubs and trees, but a majority of the softscape work was completed by Devon.
This project was also featured on the pond tour in 2004 and was the highlight of that tour as well. Landscapes By Design does help out with some garden maintenance in the spring and fall, and some occasional mulching, but for the most part Devon likes to handle the landscape up-keep around her house.
